Greetings from Tink World!
So, in the fall we took on a couple of major projects. One of the largest was running water lines in/to every field. Some of our fields have been without water. That meant that the cows would have to walk further than we'd like to access fresh water. It really limited our ability to properly manage our grass. This alone is a huge dream come true!
Pads were graded for new water troughs. After the water lines were covered, the troughs were installed. Then, new electric fences were put up to serve as cross fencing. It all happened very quickly, but took a while to complete the entire project.
The new water troughs are pretty cool. If you clicked the link above, you saw a video of the cows trying to figure out the trough. It's different from what we've used in years past. Usually we use something like what's below, where the top is open and the cows can drink from it like it's a large cup. Those troughs are fine and we still use them in places. However, the ones just installed are closed topped. That prevents trash and sunlight from getting in, which in turn keeps the tank clean and free of algae. Also, the troughs won't freeze during cold weather. That means that we aren't walking from trough to trough during winter to break up the ice or fixing any busted pipes leading to the trough. So, it's exciting for us and the cows, a win-win.
As for markets, Team Tink will be at the Decatur Farmers Market on Wednesday, March 16. The hours are 3-6 p.m. This is the last time we will appear at the Wednesday Market. So, make plans to come see us!
Well, that's all for now. Have a great week. We'll see you at the market!
