Greetings from Tink World!
And the drought continues for much of the state. We are in desperate need of rain. It looks like there's no rain in sight and that's just depressing.
Speaking of sad news, Many Folds Farm, a small sheep creamery in Georgia, will be closing in January 2017. According to their website, "problems of scale and consumer access and education" were cited as some of the reasons they have decided to shut their doors. They will continue to farm the land, they just need some time to figure out the next step.
This is a glimpse into the harsh truth that all small farmers face. We all struggle to keep on our path of being a small farming business. The problems they cited as reasons to close the business are reasons that we've often thought about closing ours.
Access to the products of small farms is one of the biggest problems. Admit it, we have all skipped buying local because we couldn't hit the farmers market or make a trip to the farm. We go to the most convenient method for buying our food and that often means going to the grocery store. It might not sound like much, but those times you skip the farmers market, it hurts the farmers. We have been working with wholesalers to offer our products through other avenues. So, that Tink's Beef and Pork is more accessible.
There are many other problems small farmers face. It's hard sometimes to continue to do what we do when we face so many challenges. I know this isn't the only farm to close. It's one of the most recent and most public. Let's hope this isn't a trend.
As for a raffle update, we will be drawing for the Tink's Beef Family Pack on Saturday, the 5th. We only have about 10 tickets left. So, purchase yours tomorrow at the Decatur Farmers Market.
We are pushing back the drawing date for the Nerium Pack and the gun/money. We have a lot of out of towners that want to participate. So, we are waiting for checks to come in. We have a few of those tickets available as well. So, get yours today! We will keep you updated on the drawing date. It will happen in the next few weeks.
So far, we have raised a little over $8000. Keep sharing, keep praying and keep the positivity coming! Help us send Tink to Cali for Stem Cell Treatment! Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, to those that have helped and donated. We are getting close!
That's all for now. We'll see you at the market!
