Greetings from Tink World!
In case you've been hiding under a rock, let me catch you up on two important things that are changing about the meat at your local grocery store. A couple weeks ago I blogged about how our meat will no longer contain a label telling us the country of origin. It's scary enough that we don't know how the meat was produced. Now, we won't know what country the animals are from.
Now, the USDA okays shipping chicken grown in the U.S. to China for processing. According to Food Safety News, it's cheaper to ship the chicken to China for processing and back than to have it processed in the U.S. What's so alarming is that this process is already done with some of the seafood bought in the U.S. It's caught in the Pacific, shipped to China to be processed/packaged and shipped back to the U.S. for our consumption.
China doesn't have strict guidelines or laws about food safety. Plus, there will be no USDA inspectors on site at the Chinese plants. This process won't have to be made public either. There will be no way of knowing what chicken products were processed in China.
What do we do about it? Well, you vote with your fork. Support local farmers, such as Darby Farms. Also, contact your local representatives to let them know how you feel about the safety and future of our food!
As for markets, Team Tink will be busy this week. We will be delivering to Augusta and Athens Locally Grown. Plus, we'll drop off our monthly order to Nature's Garden Express. Then, on Saturday, August 8, Team Tink will be back in action at the Decatur Farmers Market.
Don't forget that you can place an order for pick up at the Decatur Market or the Washington Market. Please have all orders in by Thursday at midnight. You can also schedule a farm pick up. Just shoot us an email, email@example.com, and we'll make it happen!
That's all for now. Have a great week. We'll see you at the market!
