Beating a cold

Greetings from Tink World! 

Well, I guess it decided to be winter today. It'll be back in the spring like temperatures soon though. This winter has been incredibly mild, almost a bit scary how warm it has been. It's great to have warm weather with littles, but I'm worried that it will be blazing hot this summer.  I guess you can't have it all.   

We have been on a germ fighting mission lately. There's a lot going around and my oldest is in school. So, he brings home a lot of germs. That means I've been doing a lot of research about the foods to eat to be sure we are all getting the vitamins we need. 

Zinc, Vitamin D and C are all vital to having a healthy immune system. The wonderful weather makes it easy to get Vitamin D, but we still add some in the form on a drinkable vitamin for the kids and in pill form for the adults. Research shows that 42% of American adults were deficient in vitamin D. That's astounding. This vitamin is essential for bone health, but also helps our immune system and a range of other things. The best ways to get the D you need is to expose your bare skin, no SPF, to the sun, and to take a supplement. 

Vitamin C is pretty easy to consume. Bell peppers, leafy greens, kiwi, citrus, berries, broccoli, peas and tomatoes all contain vitamin C. You can also drink orange juice with added vitamin D, but juices tend to be watered down and ultra pasteurized. It's better to eat the fruits and vegetables or to squeeze your own. However, you can find organic, cold pressed juice as a great way to drink your C.

Here's the newest part of my findings, beef contains zinc! Zinc is important for proper immune function and also aids in smelling and tasting. Red meat and poultry both provide zinc in our diets. Oysters, if you're into that sort of thing, also have high amounts of zinc. Beef, second to oysters, provides almost half of our daily intake of zinc when only consuming 3 oz. Dark meat from chickens can provide only 15% of our daily intake when consuming 3 oz. 

So, we've been eating plenty of beef, berries, citrus and getting time outside. When the kids aren't into what I've cooked, which does happen, I sneak an organic powdered protein vitamin in oatmeal, smoothies and/or pancakes. It takes great and helps them get a lot of good stuff to stay healthy.

The last thing I'll share with you is elderberry syrup. It's a staple in our house. We take it almost everyday and double up on it when we are sick. Elderberries have been used for wound treatment for centuries. It also helps treat colds and flu. The berries contain a chemical that helps reduce swelling in the mucous membranes. They also contain flavonoids that prevent damage to our cells. The syrup is easy to make and tastes great!
